Top Google Business Profile Categories for Tradies

A customer in Midland searches “emergency plumber” at 7 pm. Another in Mundaring looks for a landscaper before starting a backyard overhaul. Google needs to quickly work out which local businesses are relevant. Your categories are one of the strongest signals it uses. Choosing the top Google Business Profile categories for your actual work can help put your business in front of people ready to call.

This is not about ticking every box that sounds remotely related to your trade. It is about telling Google, clearly and honestly, what you do best. Get it wrong and you can show up for less useful searches, attract poor-fit enquiries, or lose ground to a local competitor with a more focused profile.

Why Google Business Profile categories matter

Your primary category is the main label Google attaches to your business. It helps determine the searches your profile may appear for, the features available on your listing, and how Google understands your services.

For a local tradie, this matters because most customers do not search for a business name when they have a problem. They search for the job: “electrician near me”, “roof leak repair”, “retaining wall builder”, or “split system installer”. The closer your profile matches the service they need, the better your chance of being considered.

Categories are not a magic ranking switch. Google also looks at proximity, reviews, your website, profile completeness, activity and how well your business matches the search. But the wrong main category gives Google a confused starting point. A strong website cannot fully fix that.

Pick the category that matches the work you want more of

Start with the service that is most central to your business, not the service you did once last year. If most of your revenue and jobs come from plumbing, choose Plumber as the primary category. If you are a sparky doing residential and commercial electrical work, Electrician is usually the sensible starting point.

The best primary category is generally the most specific one available that accurately describes your core service. “Builder” may be right for a general building business. But if you mainly build decks, pergolas and outdoor structures, a more specific available category may be a better fit. The answer depends on what customers book you for and what you genuinely want more of.

Do not choose a category just because it appears to have high search volume. Selecting Electrician will not help a plumber rank for electrical work, and it can send the wrong message to customers who land on your profile.

Common primary category starting points

These are sensible examples for Perth trade and local service businesses. Google’s category list can change, so search the live options in your profile and choose the closest accurate match.

| Your main work | Likely primary category | Extra categories to consider only if you offer them | |—|—|—| | General plumbing, leaks, blocked drains | Plumber | Drainage service, Gas installation service | | Residential or commercial electrical work | Electrician | Security system installer, Solar energy contractor | | Gardens, paving, turf and outdoor makeovers | Landscaper | Lawn care service, Paving contractor | | Interior and exterior painting | Painter | Paint stripping service, Pressure washing service | | Renovations and general construction | Builder | Bathroom remodeler, Deck builder | | Roof repairs and roof replacements | Roofing contractor | Gutter cleaning service, Insulation contractor | | Split systems, heating and cooling | Air conditioning contractor | Heating contractor, Air conditioning repair service |

The point is not to copy a row blindly. A landscaper who only does garden maintenance should not present as a major landscape construction business. A builder who focuses on bathrooms should not lead with a broad category if bathroom renovations are the work they want filling the diary.

Add extra categories without turning your profile into a mess

Google lets you add secondary categories, and they can be useful when they represent real, regular services. They give Google more context and help customers understand the range of jobs you handle.

Use them to support your main category, not replace it. A plumbing business might add Drainage service if blocked drains are a real part of the business. An electrician that installs security cameras may add a relevant security installation category. A painter who pressure cleans houses before painting can add that service only if it is genuinely available to customers.

A good rule is simple: if someone calls from that category, can you confidently quote and complete the job? If the answer is no, leave it out.

Adding irrelevant categories is a common mistake. A general handyman might be tempted to add plumber, electrician, builder, painter and landscaper. That creates a vague profile and may attract work that needs licences, equipment or experience the business does not have. It also makes reviews, photos and services harder to keep consistent.

Most trade businesses do not need a long list. Start with your best-fit primary category and add a small number of genuine secondary services. Quality and accuracy beat category stuffing every time.

Match categories with your services, photos and reviews

Categories work better when the rest of your profile backs them up. If your main category is Roofing contractor, your profile should show real roofing work, explain roof repairs and replacements in your services, and include reviews that mention the jobs you completed.

This gives customers confidence before they call. It also gives Google consistent information about what your business does.

For each category you use, make sure there is proof elsewhere on the profile:

  • Add the related service with a plain-English description.
  • Upload photos from real jobs, with clear before-and-after shots where useful.
  • Ask happy customers for honest reviews after completing that type of work.
  • Make sure the matching service is properly covered on your website.

You do not need to force keywords into every sentence. “Fixed a blocked drain in Sawyers Valley” is useful because it describes a real job. A review packed with awkward phrases is not.

What categories cannot fix

Changing categories can improve relevance, but it will not solve every visibility problem. If your business is new, has few reviews, shows an old phone number, has weak service information or sends customers to a slow, unclear website, you will still lose enquiries.

Distance matters too. A plumber based in the Perth Hills may be highly relevant for a search in Gidgegannup but less likely to appear prominently for someone on the other side of Perth. Categories cannot override location. What they can do is help Google match you to the right local searches within the areas you genuinely service.

Also, do not use categories to claim suburbs or services you do not cover. Your service area should reflect where you actually travel, and your business details should stay consistent. More coverage on paper is not always more work in real life, particularly when travel time starts eating into your day.

How to check and update your categories

Review your Google Business Profile when your services change, not every week because you saw a competitor appear in the map results. If you have added a proper new division, hired qualified staff for a new service, or shifted the type of work you take on, update the categories to reflect that.

Before making changes, look at the jobs you want more of, the jobs that make good money, and the language customers use when they call. Then compare that with your current primary category, secondary categories and service list. Often the problem is obvious: a business is positioned as a broad contractor while most profitable enquiries are for a specific service.

If you are unsure, do not guess and constantly swap categories. Frequent changes make it harder to measure what is working. Make a sensible update, ensure the rest of your profile supports it, then give it time while you keep building reviews and adding proof of your work.

The right category will not fill your calendar on its own. But it gives your Google Business Profile a clear job: put the right trade in front of the right local customer when they need help. If your profile is vague, outdated or bringing in the wrong calls, Yazoogle can help sort the basics properly so your online presence brings in work worth taking.
